For many of our patients, missing teeth are a source of embarrassment and discomfort. There are several replacement options available, but one of the longest-lasting and most durable are dental implants.

Choosing to get dental implants is an investment in the appearance and strength of your smile. If you’re considering this tooth replacement procedure, one of your first questions might be: how long will they last

We’re going to provide an overview about what conditions and activities affect dental implants, along with how you can take care of them properly:

Are Dental Implants Permanent?

Dental implants (the screws that are inserted into the jawbone) are designed to be permanent. Through the osseointegration process, the titanium screws fuse with your jawbone. The crown (or artificial tooth) that’s attached to the abutment will last an average of 10-15 years

With proper care and maintenance, your dental implants can potentially last a lifetime. However, even if the implant fails, it can be treated by your dentist. Be sure to schedule an appointment if you notice any pain, sensitivity, or signs of an infection.

What Causes Dental Implants To Fail?

Even though dental implants can last for many years, certain conditions and activities can damage them. Here are a few common reasons why dental implants can be unsuccessful:

  • Smoking. Smoking tobacco will drastically affect dental implants. This is because it interferes with the osseointegration process by reducing blood flow. Other substances, such as alcohol and drugs, can also hinder the healing process of dental implants.

  • Gum disease. Periodontal disease impacts the health of the tissues and bones in your mouth. If the infection reaches the jawbone, it may cause erosion; patients with advanced periodontitis might be ineligible for dental implants.

  • Poor oral hygiene. Artificial teeth require the same care as your natural teeth. Neglecting your oral hygiene can cause the dental implants to lose stability or become infected.

  • Bruxism. Do you grind your teeth while you sleep, or when you feel stressed? The force from your jaws can make dental implants unstable. It may even damage the crowns attached to the titanium screws.

  • Other medical conditions. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, or another pre-existing condition, talk to your dentist before getting a dental implant.

Make Your Dental Implants Last Longer

Along with brushing and flossing regularly, be sure to visit your dentist twice a year. During your cleanings, the dentist can spot any signs of damage near the implants and treat them accordingly.

Dental implants that are located at the back of your mouth will be subjected to more pressure; this is because you use your molars to chew. To keep them intact, avoid chewing ice, sticky foods, or tough meats. And never open plastic packages with your teeth!

If you have any health conditions, be sure to let your dentist know before your implants are installed. They may recommend alternative tooth replacement options that will work better for your body.
